Dell Precision M660 Graphic Driver Install Makes Desktop Screen Black

Babu V

Hi Ed,

Thank you for posting your query in Microsoft Community.

From your issue description I understand that, when you install display drives you will receive blue screen errors.

I can imagine the inconvenience you have experienced. Don't worry; we will give our best to help you.

I would appreciate if you could answer the following question:

What is the model number of your Laptop?

As the issue occurs when you install the updated drivers, I suggest you to contact Dell for a video driver that is appropriate for your model number.

Hope this will be helpful. If you still have further queries, please reply us and we will be happy to help you.

Not blue screen; black screen with only a cursor.

Dell Inspiron N5010

The issue started after some Microsoft updates.

I ran the registry fix listed on PC world, no change. I did a factory restore, same result.

Deleting the driver allowed me to recover the screen. This was advised on one of the threads.

I cannot restore the driver without loosing the screen again.

It has the Intel video; the driver Dell recommended is Intel Graphics Media Accelerator Driver version A02 for Inspiron - N5010

Somewhere between Microsoft Dell and Intel, they have a serious issue which they need to fix. I see the same issue on many message boards with lots of vague solutions.

Intel HD Graphics  8.15.10.2202

Intel display audio 6.12.00.3071

I have the same issue on a Dell Precision M6600 running Win 7 Pro 64. Same thing happens on laptop monitor and external monitor.

The only difference is I have no mouse cursor.  It boots fine with deleted video driver. When the video driver is installed, it only goes to black screen.

It turns out Dell had to replace my video graphics card - it had gotten completely fried. Fortunately, this machine came with the 3-year gold-plated warranty, so there was no charge for that. I plan to renew that warranty.

Anyway, deleting the video driver initially solved the problem by bypassing the graphics card and going to native resolution. Which, of course, wasn't that great, even though it did work.

Hope this helps.

This looks like the same issue and luckily we also have the gold-plated warranty. Hopefully it's not been three years. Thanks so much for your help. I had updated the chipset and video drivers about 5 times with no luck.
